Karel Stes (1953) Karel Stes graduated at the Law Faculty of the University of Ghent in 1976. After his Schuman traineeship at the European Parliament he joined the legal department of CMB in 1977. He was appointed head of the legal and insurance department of Bocimar in 1985. In 1991 Karel Stes was appointed legal manager of the CMB Group.
Following the CMB/Exmar demerger in 2003 he joined Exmar as Chief legal officer; in addition to this function he is company secretary since January 2009. He is a director of Exmar Offshore Services (Lux) S.A.
Karel Stes is chairman of the Documentary Committee and member of the Executive Committee of BIMCO (Baltic and International Maritime Council) since June 2009. He is chairman of the Belgian Maritime Law Association and chairman of the legal committee of the Royal Belgian Shipowners Association. Karel Stes is member of the Royal Commission for the revision of the Belgian Maritime Law and member of the Belgian Institute of Company Lawyers.
